Biden recently made a public address from the Oval Office. In his speech, he described his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race as an important step to preserve democracy. Speaking about his long tenure in the public service, he emphasized that uniting the party and protecting democratic values will always be at the forefront.
He stated, “I hold this office in the highest regard, but my love for my country surpasses any personal title.” He concluded with a heartfelt note: “Serving as your president has been the greatest honor of my life. In these times, defending democracy is paramount, and my dedication to working for the American people brings me both strength and joy.”
Biden Emphasizes Democracy in Departure From 2024 Race
Biden didn’t explicitly mention Donald Trump during his Oval Office address. Instead, he sought to contrast his decisions with the former president’s actions. Biden emphasized the fundamentals of American democracy, saying that power rests with the people, not with “kings and dictators.” Does this mean Trump is a dictator?
Following this, he urged everyone that the future of America is now in the hands of its citizens. Since Biden no longer holds the position of the leading Democratic contender, he acknowledged that he had transitioned from being the presumed nominee to a figure who would step aside.

As you all know, Kamala Harris is now his successor after consulting with party members who doubted Biden’s ability to seek a second term. Due to the questions surrounding his age and mental fitness, questions like “Does Biden stand the chance of winning?” have resurfaced.
According to him, yes. He spoke about his leadership and vision for the country, stating that his record and achievements had warranted a second term. However, protecting democratic values is critical, and he won’t let personal interests stand in the way of this goal.
Consequently, he has chosen to pass the baton to a new generation, believing it is the best way to unify the country.
What Was Biden’s Leadership Like?
In his first major address since testing positive for COVID-19 the previous week, the 11-minute speech outlined his legacy. During the address, he also articulated his objectives for the remaining months of his tenure.

After Biden highlighted his achievements from his first term, he set forth his remaining priorities, including reforms to the Supreme Court, efforts to end the Gaza conflict, strengthening American alliances, and advancing his ambitious cancer research initiative.
Following this, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. He praised her qualities and contributions, describing her as “experienced, tough, and capable.” Furthermore, he noted that she has been a “remarkable partner” and leader. He concluded by emphasizing that the decision now rests with the American people.
Biden and Trump’s Matchup
A recent poll found no clear leader in the race between Harris and Trump. However, it showed a closer contest than earlier polling of the Biden-Trump matchup. This recent poll finds voters widely supportive of Biden’s decision to step aside and his choice to remain in office through the end of his term.
However, Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters are closely split over whether the next nominee should continue Biden’s policies or take the country in a new direction. Most of those who chose a new direction were younger voters and voters of color.
Biden himself is expected to turn his attention in the coming days and weeks to the legacy of his one-term presidency. But, with the decision to drop out of the 2024 race only days old, such discussions have yet to commence.
However, as mentioned earlier, Biden has taken the opportunity to discuss his life story as a unique American. After his speech, Biden went to the Rose Garden, where he addressed many White House staffers who walked to the executive mansion to see and share ice cream with him.
