A Baltimore man convicted in a series of violent crimes against Asian business owners has been sentenced to years in prison. According to the court filings, the man targeted several Asian American businesses with violence. Also, he attempted to murder two of the business owners.
Daryl Doles, 53, bagged a life sentence with all but 30 years suspended on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. According to the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office, Doles pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder and a hate crime. Also, he pleaded guilty to second-degree assault.
The State Attorney’s news release accuses the Baltimore man of assaults at three different liquor stores. In May 2021, Doles swung at a security guard at an Asian American-owned liquor store with a 4-foot-long piece of lumber.
Afterward, he ransacked two other Asian American businesses. Then, he struck one of the owners and her sister in the head with a cement block, the release said. “This was an act of heinous violence,” State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates said in the release.
“Steeped in hatred and prejudice against two business owners in our community.” Following the ruling, Doles’ attorney, Staci Pipkin, did not respond to a request for comment. However, Pipkin said during sentencing that she requested the court evaluate her client for competency to stand trial.

Also, Pipkin claims the Baltimore man was “high out of his mind” during the incident. “He’s horrified. He’s expressed remorse,” Pipkin said, according to The Baltimore Banner, a local news website. “He has never once wavered from accepting responsibility for his actions.”
According to charging documents, Doles attacked Asian people in three separate West Baltimore businesses in less than 30 minutes. He reportedly began the string of attacks after Linden Discount Liquors denied him entry for refusing to wear a mask.
Also, the release claims the Baltimore man refused to comply with the store’s Covid restrictions. When the store’s security guard asked him to leave, Doles threw a lottery machine to the ground and walked out. However, the release alleges that he returned to the store, claiming he forgot his items.
Although the security guard forced him to leave again, Doles reacted aggressively. Then, he returned with the lumber in hand and struck the security guard. Afterward, the store owner managed to confiscate the weapon. Minutes later, the Baltimore man visited another store.

The release claims Doles visited 40/40 Liquors, where he kicked a display window and knocked down wine bottles before leaving. However, the indictment alleges that Doles yelled an anti-Asian slur when the owner ordered him never to return.
Afterward, he entered a third Asian-owned liquor store, Wonder Land Liquors, knocking over items and causing a disturbance. In addition, the release said Doles left the business briefly when the owner called the authorities.
Still, he returned as the owner began locking up the store. Doles reportedly appeared in one hand with a piece of concrete, 1 to 2 inches thick. The owner saw the object and tried to grab it from Doles but fell to the ground. Then, he grabbed her by the hair and pushed her face to the ground.
Although the owner tried to retrieve the block from Doles’ left hand, he pulled it away while kneeling atop her. The report claims “he struck her three times in the head with the concrete block.” In addition, the Baltimore man said, “They need to go back to their country.”
