On the night of February 7, 2024, Emeryville Police Department detectives arrested 22-year-old Tyler Mims of Berkeley for stealing from an Apple Store in Berkeley. Mims, allegedly caught on camera grabbing display devices, brazenly walked past a police vehicle before making his way to a getaway car.
Mims now faces burglary, grand theft, and other related crimes. On Monday, February 5, law enforcement officers from the department responded to a reported crime scene. A caller detailed the suspect’s escape with 50 iPhones valued at $49,230.
The masked individual, later identified as Mims, wore all-black attire and was seen moving from table to table on video. The incident reportedly occurred around 10.30 a.m. on Monday. He forcibly removed phones from their displays and stashed them in his pockets.
Most people highlighted the irony in the suspect’s choice of stolen items. They noted that aside from iPhones, he took tracking devices, considering that the location of any Apple device can be traced using the “Find My” app.

Others characterized his actions as foolish, with many calling it idiotic. Additionally, some people likened the suspect to the character Professor from “Money Heist,” suggesting a misguided attempt at such a theft.
In the 45-second video, the suspect took several phones valued at hundreds of dollars. He exited the store, walking past a police cruiser before quickly getting in a black Hyundai. However, the video circulated on social media the following day.
The department has already addressed four grand thefts from the local Apple Store since January 19, 2024. Following the initial incident, detectives collaborated with nearby agencies experiencing similar theft patterns. They identified these incidents as organized retail crimes.
On Thursday, February 8, the department revealed that a coordinated effort on Wednesday night led to the arrests linked to a morning theft at the Apple Store. Notably, the coordinated efforts involved the department detectives, the Berkeley Police Department, and the California Highway Patrol.

The video had over 10 million views on TikTok and X combined. Moreover, it gained more attention as of Thursday, February 8. According to the E’ville Eye, the Apple Store featured in the video underwent a closure for several months last year. However, they resumed operations in January 2024.
One such event happened in 2018. The Roseville police revealed a picture of four hooded individuals who targeted the Apple Store in Roseville. According to the photo, the men made off with 23 Apple products. According to reports, the men entered the store, using a style of cutting security lines to steal 20 iPhones, two MacBook Pros, and one iPad mini.
Initially, police reported that the men wore masks and gloves. However, they later revealed that they wore hooded sweatshirts cinched around the face. To date, no additional details are available regarding the incident.
