From love’s sweet embrace to death’s cold hands, Tommy and Katherine Barron endured it together. The late couple could barely care for themselves, but they looked out for each other until their last moments. According to their daughter, Sherene Thompson, the Alabama couple loved each other immensely.
Their hearts were so intertwined that Tommy couldn’t bear to live without his wife. Hence, he died hours after she passed on January 24, 2024. According to Thompson, her mother, Katherine, died at a local hospital just after 4 a.m. that day. However, Tommy died about eight hours later.
According to Thompson, while Katherine was 79, Tommy was 81. Thompson’s late mother, Katherine, reportedly had dementia. However, things went downhill over the past six months. “She didn’t remember anybody,” Thompson said.
Thompson noted that Katherine rarely responded to questions or people in the room. “She got COVID, and she developed pneumonia,” Thompson said. As a result, Katherine was in and out of the hospital a lot. Ultimately, pneumonia and a blood clot in her lung took her life.

Thompson, the couple’s only child, revealed during an interview that she was at her mother’s bedside when she passed. She said her father was there too. Thompson noted that Tommy said he didn’t want to live without his wife after her tragic death.
“I don’t want to make it without her.” her father said. Tommy added that he couldn’t live without his wife, stating, “I just want to go with her.” Afterward, he died around 11:00 a.m. at the Albertville assisted living home the couple lived in. Tommy had health issues, but his daughter thinks his love for her mother is what took his life.
“I honestly believe that he died of a broken heart,” Thompson said. While speaking about her parent’s death, Thompson revealed they met through mutual friends in the 1960s. She claimed her father’s resemblance to country singer Conway Twitty drew her mother in.
According to Thompson, Twitty was Katherine’s favorite singer. “If you look at the pictures of my dad, he favored him a lot,” she said, adding that they soon began dating. “They ran off in the middle of the night in Trenton, Georgia, and married.”
Afterward, Tommy opened his used car lot in the 1970s, and the couple ran the business for about 40 years. However, the startup closed when Tommy had a series of accidents, which caused his health to plummet. On the other hand, Thompson said Katherine was “as healthy as a horse.”
She said her mom was fashionable and tried to keep up with current fashion trends. Also, Thompson said Katherine only went to the grocery store if her face and every hair on her head was in place. Hence, Thompson ensured they did her hair and makeup properly during the couple’s memorial service.
“That’s something that would’ve been a big deal with her,” Thompson said. The family honored Tommy and Katherine during a joint memorial service, where they played “The Rose” by Conway Twitty. Also, they buried the lovebirds side-by-side next to Tommy’s parents.
Thompson said what she loved most about her parents was that they cared for each other despite their health. “My mom could barely get around,” she said. “But she made sure to hold on to my dad so he wouldn’t fall.” She added, “They just took care of each other.”
