A five-year-old recently lost her life after getting hit by a school bus in Rockland County, New York, according to authorities. The sad incident happened on Friday, February 16, 2024, around 11:15 a.m. on South Madison Avenue near Hillman Place in Spring Valley.
In the accounts shared with CBS New York, witnesses shared that the school bus driver involved was distraught. According to a woman familiar with the girl’s family, a funeral for the five-year-old took place in the neighboring town of Monsey.
Following the tragic incident, concerned neighbors advocate for reduced speed limits in the area. Spring Valley resident Gene Focus told CBS New York, “My condolences, man. People gotta watch out for these buses. Gotta see where the kids are going. I don’t even know how that happened, but how do you not see someone crossing the street?”
Another resident, Brian DeMasi, stated, “It’s unfortunate. They go too fast on this street, too fast. They don’t slow down.” The circumstances leading to the crash remain unclear, and the incident is still under investigation.

A similar event also happened in Georgia as an eight-year-old girl lost her life after a driver hit her. The sad incident occurred while attempting to board a school bus. The driver, now arrested, collided with the girl on Jackson Lake Road at the intersection of a private driveway.
According to Georgia State Patrol, the school bus had its red flashing lights activated. Additionally, both front and rear stop signs were up during the incident. After the collision, they airlifted the young girl to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital. The girl grappled with life-threatening injuries.
Eventually, she succumbed to her injuries. The driver was 25-year-old Kaylee Andre. She is currently in the Henry County Jail, facing several charges. These charges include first-degree vehicular homicide, failure to stop for a school bus loading and unloading, and failure to exercise due care.
Another similar scenario happened in Las Vegas earlier this month as one pickup truck hit an 11-year-old boy, Ryan Kim. The incident occurred when Kim was riding his electric bicycle on the sidewalk to school.

The collision occurred at Cactus Avenue and Cliff Lake Street around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. Kim was reportedly on his way to Gunderson Middle School when he got hit by a 2012 Nissan Frontier. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, the vehicle knocked him off his bike and ran him over.
His mother expressed her grief, stating, “I miss my son. I’m scared.” According to reports, Kim’s last words were, “Mom, I love you.” Sadly, that became the last time she heard his voice. In a recent update shared on a GoFundMe page for Kim’s surgeries, family friend Kristen Penny gave some encouraging news.
Penny mentioned that Kim is alive, responsive, and able to hear. However, Kim still needs additional surgeries in his ongoing journey toward recovery.
